The Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City

The Meridian Gate 午门 wǔ mén is the place where the emperor presided over military parades and announced the new calendar. The central gate was always reserved for the emperor, the empress on her wedding day, and the three top graduates of the imperial examination on their reception day. The left gate was reserved for civil and military officials, and the right gate for the imperial family and relatives.
