The Shanhaijing 山海经 , or Classic of Mountains and Seas, is one of the foundational texts of Chinese mythology. Written between the 4th century BCE and the 2nd century CE, it describes a world where imaginary geography, divine narratives, fabulous creatures, and distant peoples are intertwined. A true mythical encyclopedia, it testifies to the richness of ancient Chinese imagination and has profoundly influenced literature and the arts to this day.
